I have noticed a lot of "old fogies" getting on board the train that we have been riding. To that end, here are the essential tools you need to keep up, and why:

Webdesign

Computer

• Get a Mac. If you already bought a PC, then you need to read the rest of this article
• If you bought a PC with Vista, and it has less than 2 GB of RAM, buy enough RAM so that your new $1,000 is at least as fast as a computer built 20 years ago. I'm not kidding.

Operating System

• Windows XP, with SP2. If you bought a computer with Vista, well, take it back and buy a Mac.

Why? Vista is a memory hog and slow unless you have enough RAM. And if you bought your computer from Dell, Gateway, Best Buy, Toshiba, or Circuit City, you don't have enough RAM.

Internet Browser

Firefox. Why? Because it is a better browser than Internet Explorer. Better means faster, leaner, and more secure.

Bookmarking

Word Processing

• Google for Domains.

Why? the internet is the new desktop. Suitable for most users.

• Diagraming | Concept Draw 7 - $299

Pros: Not versioned like Visio, you get all templates(everything from landscape/house plans to ERDs and Network diagrams), can view/import Visio files, is a vector based editor as well a diagraming tool

• Database ERD |Power Architect - Freeware

Pros: Can reverse and forward engineer MYSQL databases Cons: Would require this and Concept Draw vs. one app like Visio

• HTML | APTANA - Freeware

Pros: Simple to the point, has page outliner, has code assist for PHP & JS

Cons: no WYSIWYG

• MySQL| Navicat - $129

Pros: Very Simple, HTTP tunneling, batch jobs,visual query builder, basic server monitor, sync for data and structure

Cons: Still not as powerful as SQLYog or MySQL Manager

• FTP | Filezilla - Freeware

Pros: Free, multiple threads for uploading, SFTP

Cons: lacks multiple remote server connections

Photo Editing

• Photoshop.

Why? Don't mess with the other tinkertoys.
