1) Upload the file you want people to be able to download. Example: File:Top 10 Mistakes.pdf
2) Right Click on that file to get its actual url:
http://wikiarquitectura.com/images/f/fd/Top_10_Mistakes.pdf
3) Edit the article that you want to have the link in, and add:
<imagemap> Image:Pdf.png|80px|Testing PDF default [http://wikiarquitectura.com/images/f/fd/Top_10_Mistakes.pdf] </imagemap>
where
- Image:Pdf.png is your thumbnail,
- 80PX is the size
- Testing PDF is the alt tag.
- default is the URL of the file you want to download, from #2 above.
issues
there are a few issues you should be aware of;
- i did not upload all the images you gave me...just few for examples
- clicking on a certain file types will cause it to attempt to open in the browser. A good example of this is the PDF and JPG file below.
- since the files try to open in the browser, the user needs to have a program installed that will handle that. .dwg seems to be fine.
Note that the MIME type used when the actual file is served to the user's browser is not determined by MediaWikis MIME-detection: files are not served through MediaWiki, but directly by the web server. Thus, the web server must be configured to use the correct MIME type for each file extension - for example, if you are having trouble viewing SVG files in your browser, make sure the server is configured to deliver them as image/svg+xml. (For Apache, read about mod_mime).
- work arounds are as follows:
- upload file only after it has been .zip'd. this will force the download dialogue from the browser
- make a template or a note that tells people to RIGHT CLICK on the file to "Save Link As" instead of just clicking...
- pay me or someone to write a custom extension that force this to go to download. it is server intensive, and your host might not allow it... http://www.google.com/search?q=browser+save+instead+of+open
